Pidgin, the universal chat client
Do you hate that you have a facebook messenger, skype, yahoo and a butt load of other messaging apps on your desktop? Do you scream for a client that just unites everything in one window? Well, scream no more, here is Pidgin, the universal chat client.
Installation
Pidgin is in the Ubuntu repository, but Ubuntu does not update it, is unless of security issues. Therefore the pidgin developers made a ppa, which you can add to your sources, and be updated when there is a new version available
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pidgin-developers/ppa
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get install pidgin
Plugins
To get skype to work, you need skype itself installed sudo apt-get install skype
and install the plugin like so: sudo apt-get install pidgin-skype
. the facebook messenger is installed by default, select the skype
and Facebook (XMPP)
.
I definitely recommend to see the Pidgin - Third Party Plugins page. There are some plugins which you might like.
