Handbrake is one of those Linux gems that, in my experience, provides a certain quality equivalent to VLC. And after 13 years, they have reached version 1.0.0. Here is whats new...

    • New general use presets for broad compatibility
    • New device presets, now more up-to-date for common devices
    • New web presets
    • New Matroska (MKV) presets, including VP9 video with Opus audio

  • New JSON-based preset system including command line support
  • New JSON-based API for interacting with libhb

The easiest way to download and stay up to date with the latest HandBrake release is via PPA.

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk # GUI
  4. sudo apt-get install handbrake-cli # CLI
